How to Change Your IP Address on iPhone

Last updated: November 2, 2026 · Applies to iOS 17 and later · Menu names can vary slightly by iOS version

Short answer: on Wi-Fi, go to Settings > Wi-Fi > (i) > Renew Lease. To change your public IP, restart your router, toggle Airplane Mode on cellular, or connect through a VPN.

First: which IP address do you want to change?

Your local IP is assigned by your router. Your public IP is assigned by your ISP or carrier. They are changed in different ways, and not every method works every time, because providers decide whether to hand you the same address again. Not sure which is which? See how to find your IP address.

Change your local IP: renew the lease

  1. Open Settings > Wi-Fi and tap the (i) next to your network.
  2. Tap Renew Lease, then confirm.

Your iPhone asks the router for an address again. The router may give you the same one or a different one.

Another way: forget the network and rejoin

  1. In the same screen, tap Forget This Network.
  2. Rejoin from the Wi-Fi list and enter the password.

This also resets saved settings for that network, so you will need the Wi-Fi password.

Set a static IP address on your iPhone

  1. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi > (i).
  2. Tap Configure IP and choose Manual.
  3. Enter an IP Address, Subnet Mask and Router, then tap Save.

Pick an address on your router's subnet that is not already in use, or two devices will conflict. A more reliable option is a DHCP reservation in your router, which always gives the iPhone the same address while keeping iOS on Automatic.

To undo it, set Configure IP back to Automatic.

Change your public IP address

  • Restart your router. Unplug it for several minutes, then plug it back in. Many home ISPs assign a new address when you reconnect, but some keep yours for days.
  • Cellular: turn Airplane Mode on for about 10 seconds, then off. Carriers often assign a different address when you reconnect.
  • Switch networks. Moving between Wi-Fi and cellular always gives you the other network's public address.
  • Use a VPN or iCloud Private Relay. Websites then see the VPN's or relay's address. See how to hide your IP address.

After any change, check your public IP to confirm it is different.

Common questions

Does changing my IP address change my location?

Only partly. A new address from the same ISP usually maps to the same region. A VPN can place you somewhere else.

Is it legal?

Changing your own IP address with the methods above is routine. Using a VPN to break a service's rules or the law is a different matter.

Why does my IP keep changing?

Most home and mobile connections use dynamic addresses. That is normal.
