How to See and Share Your Wi-Fi Password on iPhone
Short answer: on iOS 16 or later, go to Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the (i) next to the network, tap Password, and confirm with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. Tap the password to copy it. To share it with a nearby iPhone, hold the two phones close and tap Share Password when the prompt appears.
How to see a saved Wi-Fi password
- Open Settings > Wi-Fi.
- Tap the (i) next to the network. It can be the one you are connected to, or a saved network in the list.
- Tap Password. It shows as dots until you confirm it is you.
- Unlock with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. The password appears.
- Touch and hold the password, or tap it, to Copy it.
On many versions you can also tap Edit at the top of the Wi-Fi screen to see every saved network. On newer versions of iOS the Passwords app also lists saved Wi-Fi networks. Menu names vary by version.
If you have iOS 15 or earlier
Older versions of iOS do not show saved Wi-Fi passwords in Settings. Try one of these instead:
- Check the router. The default password is often printed on a sticker on the router, unless it was changed.
- Open the router's admin page. See how to find your router's IP address. The Wi-Fi password is usually under the wireless settings.
- Update iOS. If your iPhone supports iOS 16 or later, updating gives you the Password option.
How to share your Wi-Fi password with another iPhone
You do not need to read the password out loud. Your iPhone can send it to a nearby Apple device.
- Make sure your iPhone is unlocked and connected to the Wi-Fi network.
- Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both devices, and hold them close together.
- Ask the other person to open Settings > Wi-Fi and tap the network name.
- A Wi-Fi Password card appears on your iPhone. Tap Share Password, then Done.
This usually only works if the other person's Apple Account email address is saved in your Contacts. It works with iPhones, iPads and Macs. For other devices, such as Android phones, read the password out or copy and paste it.
If the password does not show
- Your iPhone has no passcode. iOS needs a passcode, Face ID or Touch ID to reveal it.
- The network is a work or school network that asks for a username and password. These do not have a single shared password to show.
- The network is not saved. If you tapped Forget This Network, the saved password was deleted. Copy it first next time.
- The iOS version is too old. See the section above.
After you change the Wi-Fi password
If you change the password on your router, every device that saved the old one stops connecting. On your iPhone, forget the network and join again with the new password. If you see an error, see how to fix “Unable to Join the Network”.
Keeping your Wi-Fi password safe
- Do not post it in public or send it in an unprotected message.
- Change the router's default password and the admin login.
- Use your router's guest network for visitors, so they do not get access to your main devices.
Common questions
Can I see the password of a network I am not connected to?
Yes, if your iPhone has saved it. Tap the (i) next to it in the list of known networks.
Does viewing the password let anyone else see it?
No. You have to confirm with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode first.
Is the Wi-Fi password the same as my router's login?
No. The Wi-Fi password lets devices join the network. The router login lets you change its settings.
